it doesn't snow heavily that often in london, however when it does cycling across the city is the last thing i want to risk. having snow-specific tyres would be an option but would involve spending time changing the tyres when you needed them. cesar van rongen aims to solve that problem with 'bike spikes'.
in the same way that snow chains fit over car wheels for snowy conditions, the bike spikes fit over the tyres already on your bike. made of six flexible parts with embedded spikes for added grip, they have a tensionable metal wire that runs through them so that they can be tightened around the wheel. quick to fit, easy to store, and they work even on normal asphalt according to the designer:
On ordinary asphalt they will still be comfortable. The special winter bike tyre can easily be fixed to any city bike. And when it thaws, the Bike Spikes can be taken off in an instant and folded into a compact little package.
it'd be great to see how these perform, they could be so useful in snowy and icy streets!
